12/13/2006 This past Saturday, we went on a family trip to get our Christmas tree. Last year, I read an article in the Poughkeepsie Journal about local tree farms. In the past, we had always purchased pre-cut trees from one of the roadside vendors in the area. After reading the article in the paper, I did some research on the internet, and found a tree farm in the town of Poughkeepsie that had reasonable prices, so we gave them a try. We wound up with the best tree we've ever had, at a reasonable price. Now, visiting the tree farm to cut down our own tree is a new family tradition. The Solvang Tree Farm has 10 acres of trees to choose from. In addition, they sell wreaths, and tree accessories, they have animals for the kids to pet, and sell cookies, brownies, and warm drinks as well. The staff are friendly and helpful, and it really does make a great family experience. Last year, I was foolish enough to go to the tree farm in my shorts, and sneakers. It wasn't terribly cold, but there was a decent amount of snow on the ground, and by the time the kids got done dragging me through MOST of the 10 acres to find just the right tree, I had plenty of snow in my sneakers. Then, I had to get down on my knees in the snow to cut the tree. This year I wasn't much smarter, but we had a pretty warm day, and there wasn't any snow on the ground. We wound up with what I think is the perfect tree, and a nice wreath as well, plus we had a great family experience.
Saturday evening, we took the kids out to the
Holiday
Spirit Festival
at Bowdoin Park.
The festival features two walkthrough's decorated with thousands of
Christmas lights, a holiday village / model train display, a Christmas
Carol walkthrough, gift shop, snack shop, and Santa's Reindeer barn,
where young ones can meet Santa in person. If you have kids, I
strongly recommend a visit to the spirit festival. |
